The battle of Jutland
This battle was the largest naval action in the First World War with the Imperial German High Seas Fleet of 99 ships under Vice Admiral Reinhard von Scheer meeting the Royal Navy’s Grand Fleet of 151 ships, commanded by Admiral Sir John Jellicoe.  He was the first commander since Lord Howard fighting the Spanish Armada in 1588, to have all the first class ships of the navy under his command, hence Winston Churchill’s comment that he was, ‘the only man who could lose the war in an afternoon’.

The battle was one of the few and indeed, the largest clash of Dreadnought-era battleships in world history and resulted in the greatest number of fatalities in a single day for either navy in their histories – with the Royal Navy experiencing the greatest material and personnel losses overall.

However, history now views it as a strategic success for the Royal Navy as it severely limited any forays by the German High Seas Fleet and was an often overlooked factor leading to the Armistice of 1918.

On 31st May, on Orkney, a national service of remembrance will be held in the magnificent St Magnus’ Cathedral in Kirkwall, the capital of the Orkney Islands, the town where our distillery is situated.  The remembrance event will then move to the Royal Naval Cemetery which overlooks Scapa Flow, the Navy’s main wartime base in both World War conflicts.  Many of the attendees for these events will be relatives of those who were involved in the battle.
