THE BALVENIE MALTMASTER RELEASES HIS SIGNATURE SINGLE MALT TO CELEBRATE 45 YEARS IN WHISKY MAKING

David Stewart, Malt Master of the award-winning Balvenie Distillery, has crafted The Balvenie Signature Single Malt Scotch Whisky - a new addition to The Balvenie range - to mark his 45th year in the whisky industry.

Naming it his signature Balvenie, the 12 year old single malt from the Speyside distillery is a skilful marriage from three cask types - first fill bourbon barrels, refill casks and sherry butts. From the sherry butts come rich fruit and spiciness; the bourbon barrels add subtle vanilla oak and layers of honey and the refill casks impart delicate, sweet notes and smoothness. The result of this union is a perfect balance of spice and subtle oak, deliciously enveloped in The Balvenie-„¢s trademark honeyed character.

As the longest-serving Malt Master in the industry, David Stewart personally developed the award-winning range of The Balvenie Single Malts along with his team of master craftsmen. Using his expertise in maturation, David employs different types of wood to create distinct taste and flavour nuances within the Balvenie range.

Says David, "It has given me great pleasure to create a signature whisky as part of The Balvenie range. Maturing and marrying the finest single malt Scotch whisky has been my passion for over 45 years and it-„¢s an honour to mark the moment with an addition to The Balvenie family."

The Balvenie Signature 12 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky is a limited release. Each bottle carries its own batch number, and has been handcrafted by David Stewart and his team of craftsmen at The Balvenie Distillery. Signature will go on sale in the UK and selected markets from April 2008.

The Balvenie Signature tasting notes:

Nose - A rich and complex nose with honey, citrus fruits and vanilla oak notes.

Taste: Rich honeyed sweet taste with a hint of sherry fruitiness. A spiciness (cinnamon, nutmeg) and a subtle oakiness develop with time.

The finish is warm and lingering.

Born in Ayr on the west coast of Scotland in 1945, David Stewart joined William Grant & Sons in 1962, the year before Single Malt Scotch Whisky was first officially exported to England. He was appointed the distiller-„¢s Malt Master in 1974 and his renowned ability to identify the finest casks of whisky for maturation has helped William Grant & Sons earn the of Distiller of the Year accolade an unprecedented six times (2007, 2006, 2005, 2001, 2000 and 1999).

During his 45 years at William Grant & Sons, David Stewart has developed an award-winning range of single malts and blends, earning him some of the industry-„¢s top accolades. Awarded Malt Advocate magazine-„¢s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007, he has was also the recipient of the International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC) Outstanding Achievement in the Scotch Whisky Industry award and the Grand Prix of Gastronomy award from the British Academy of Gastronomes.

Produced by independent, family-owned William Grant & Sons Ltd, IWSC Worldwide (Global) Distiller of the Year 2007, the exceptional quality of The Balvenie Single Malt is due to the fact that The Balvenie Distillery retains and nurtures a high level of craftsmanship that other malt whisky producers no longer employ: nowhere else will you find a distillery that still grows its own barley, still malts in its own traditional floor maltings and still employs coopers to tend all the casks and a coppersmith to maintain the stills.
