Julewhisky

Har selv haft bl.a.

Jack Wiebers Glen Keith "Old Trainline" 1971 (aftap.

Here comes the first tasting notes of a Jack Wieber's whisky. A nice cask strength bottled at 51.9% of alcohol, after having stayed for 33 years in a cask.
Glen Keith
The Old Train Line
1971-2005
The nose is deeply marked by sherry, delightful and voluptuous. An impression of "Baba-au-Rhum", but with sherry. No aggressivity at all, no bitter woody hints as it could have been expected for a whisky of that age.
The mouth is slightly bitter, nutty notes quickly covered by cereal hints and nice fruity notes too. Refined sherry, great palate!
The finish is lingering and very pleasant, perfectly prolonging the mouth and the nose.
A real impression of full happiness. After such a dram, nothing bad can happen in your life, except to hear this bottle is not on sale anymore... Despite this cruel deception, it really deserves a 19/20.
Congratulations, Herr Wieber!
The 33 years old version of Glen Keith from Jack Wieber was a very nice bottle. Unfortunately, not available anymore, at least in Holland where I live. This gave me the idea to try another version I could find: the 35 years old version, in the series "Cross Hill", distilled in 1971.
This was a good idea again!
Again, just pleasure. Not that Glen Keith is such a renowned distillery. But again, this bottling is another very great whisky:
If you have ever looked for a real sherry monster, you should give this one a try. Woah, what an incredible sherry nose. But there is much more. Nice complexity. Sherry mixed with dry fruit, plum, discrete wood, some coffee, lots of pleasure.
The first mouth is rather bitter, clearly marked by sherry too, before developing on coffee and woody notes and than back to sherry again. Lots of character. An absolute must have for sherry amateurs.
Would you believe it? The finish is also marked by sherry with nice discrete woody notes. It is lingering and extremely pleasant. Another fabulous whisky.
This bottle deserves a 19/20. It is simply marvelous. Thanks again Herr Wieber.

Glen Keith 33 yo 1971/2005 (51.9%, Jack Wieber's Old Train Line) Colour: deep amber. Nose: incredibly winey at first nosing, almost like an old Sauternes, with whiffs of peat smoke (did they use their now famous concentrated peaty water at the time?) Some funny notes of very ripe tomatoes, goulash, carrot cake, maybe pumpkin soup"¦ It gets fruitier with time, developing on overripe oranges and kiwis, balsamic vinegar, old clementines, with something toffeeish "“ and always these whiffs of smoke. I say it's superb!
Mouth: oh yes, this is a great sherried one. Lots of vivacity, very playful "“ not the ‘sluggish', limpy kind of sherry at all. Lot of dried fruits, both tropical and ‘northern', fruit liqueurs, freshly squeezed oranges, with also quite some rum-and-raisins this time. Dunce, toffee, praline, old sweet wine (more old Rivesaltes than sherry). No peat that I can get. Beautiful! The finish is rather long, quite coffeeish and liqueurish "“ wow, what a beauty. And it didn't get drying at all, hence my 93 points
Glen Keith 1971/2006 (51.8%, Jack Wieber's Cross Hill, 371 bottles) Colour: full amber. Nose: starts on full 'old Sauternes' mode, with tons of sultanas, very ripe strawberries, dried flowers (pot-pourri), whiffs of patchouli and oak. Very demonstrative like most of these old sherried Glen Keiths. Goes on with a little smoke, burnt bread, 100% cocoa chocolate and whiffs of torrefaction. The smokiness gets bolder by the minute, with also roasted nuts, old rum, crystallised oranges, lemon fudge. Slight meatiness (oxtail, chicken bouillon with fresh parsley and chives. Lots happening, another old Glen Keith that's close to perfection (I think the guy who was responsible for selecting these great casks deserves no less than the Victoria Cross - I hope he's still alive!). Mouth: very special! The attack is superbly spicy and fruity, powerful, assertive, invading. Very oriental, with lots of curry, pepper, cardamom, caramel, crystallised oranges, mangosteen, rosewater... Also Tabasco? Chilli sauce? A lot of clove, juniper berries, unlit Havana cigar (well chewed), prunes, caraway... Impressive and very entertaining despite the oak that gets a little dominating a moment. The finish is long, hugely spicy and fruity like some Thai dishes (kind of a spicy red sauce spring to mind). Just excellent and truly playful. 92 points

Har bl.a. tidligere været Glen Mhor
